Celebration Of being alive

“Celebration of being alive”……………….those magical words never failed to ignite the spark in me to cherish every moment in my life irrespective of whether it is good or bad. Just four words making a difference in one’s life!! Hmm...Sounds funny!! Isn’t it?? The difference might be like a drop in an ocean…but still that drop holds my ocean of life.
When I was in my 9th standard we had a lesson named “Celebration of being alive”. The lesson was about the great cardiologist Christian Barnard who did the first heart transplantation. Don’t panic….the lesson was not about the heart transplantations and surgeries……but about the way he looked at life and how his perspective changed after a series of experiences.
This lesson made me to face the outside world and develop a sense of confidence in myself. No fun at all. In one of my HR interviews, one of the persons in the panel asked me to define life and there came the answer immediately as “Life is a series of experiences”.Unknowingly I started co-relating the things with his thoughts and the best part was those words always solaced me like a mother’s lullaby. One of the amazing quotes from that lesson was:

“We cannot appreciate light unless we have known darkness…nor can we appreciate warmth unless we had suffered cold.”

The lesson ends with the conclusion from Barnard that people suffer in their lives just to become stronger and stronger. How many of us tend to think in this way in our bad times?? Why should I suffer like this?? I am very unlucky, My fate is really bad….etc. Amazing reasons to substantiate one’s failure. Aren’t they?? There is no single soul on this face of earth without a problem. And of course what fun is there in life if everything goes smoothly. I remember a proverb at this context
“Life will always reward us in proportion to our contribution”
how true! Whether we accept this or not, this is the truth. The great creator had designed everything in a balanced way which never failed to delight anyone of us even to this very day.
If every one of us, who magnify their problems, sit back and think for a while (hope the grey matter has still the capability to distinguish the good and bad) we ourselves can realize the truth that our problems are not so bad as those who are not able to afford one meal a day,not so worse than those who are orphaned by birth, not so pathetic than those who are dieing every minute with breathe taking diseases. On the other hand we have people who created miracles inspite of their difficult situations, physical disabilities. Kudos to all those for their mental strength.
       “You are what you think”
Let us not waste any more time in foreseeing the problems coming in our way and start worrying. As Christian Barnard had told, let those big problems help us to become stronger and stronger and make everyday of ours a real celebration.

Hey Sarada,

The only word for this blob is 'awesome'.
It's really bad in my part that I could not recognize such a gem who was always interacting with me.

Kudos Sarada!!!
Keep up the good writing and sometimes do celebrate of being alive leaving all your worries aside.

I too remember this lesson and don't know how many times I have read it. I had the text book too for more than 10 years, somehow got misplaced.
Could you post the article if you find it anywhere?
